Dr. Robert L. Sawyer, Sr. Center Dedicated

October 1, 2003 was a very special day for the Saluda community as we dedicated and named the center in honor of Dr. Robert L. Sawyer, Sr.  A large crowd was on hand to participate in the dedication ceremony and tour the facility.

Jeff May, Chairman of the Emerald Center Multi-County Board for Disabilities and Special Needs, welcomed the guests and the invocation was given by Reverend C. Nels Ledwell, Pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church. The Saluda High School ROTC presented the colors and the National Anthem was sung by Lori Dean, Early Childhood Coordinator for Emerald Center.  Senator Tom Moore, Representative Marion Frye and Dr. Stan Butkus, State Director for the SC Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, spoke of the many contributions Dr. Sawyer has made to the Saluda community.

Dr. Sawyer’s wife, Bonnie, and their children, Robert Lee Sawyer, Jr., Dr. William Cone Sawyer, Cecelia Sawyer Yonce, and John Grigsby Sawyer unveiled the dedicatory plaque. Anna Elizabeth Yonce, Emily Mazza Sawyer, Kristen Ashley Sawyer, William Cone Sawyer, Jr., Julia Genevieve Yonce, William Travis Yonce and Natalie Alexis Sawyer joined their grandmother in unveiling the portrait of Dr. Sawyer that will hang in the center.

Maggie Largent, Programming and Choir Director at St. Paul United Methodist Church sang “Wind Beneath My Wings” and the prayer of dedication was given by Charles E. Rollins, longtime friend of Dr. Sawyer.  Dr. Willam C. Sawyer spoke in response for his father.Dr. Robert Lee Sawyer dedicated his career to caring for the medical needs of the people of Saluda and any other place his services were needed. For forty-two years the health and life of his patients has been his first consideration. He has ministered to many people of the Saluda area over the years and of that number were hundreds of people with disabilities and special needs. Dr. Sawyer’s compassion and dedication is exemplary.

A native of Saluda County, Dr. Sawyer began his practice in Saluda following his graduation from the Medical University of South Carolina where he served as President of his class for four years. Dr. Sawyer delivered over half of Saluda County and many of his patients will tell you that he followed you from the time you were born and you are forever more referred to as his “chaps”.

Dr. Sawyer has served on the Emerald Center Multi-County Board for Disabilities and Special Needs for eight years, two of which he served as Chairman. He has served on the Saluda County School Board, the Nursing Home Board, and is a member of the Saluda Lion’s Club and St. Paul United Methodist Church.

The naming of the center in honor of Dr. Sawyer is only a small tribute to a man who has served not only his community but also has enhanced the quality of life for people with disabilities and special needs. The Saluda area and Emerald Center are better places today because of Dr. Robert Lee Sawyer, Sr. Emerald Center, its clients, staff, and board will forever be grateful to him and his family.

Sincerely,

J. Felton Burton, Executive Director

Emerald Center Ball

“We thoroughly enjoyed playing for the Emerald Center Ball.  We just thought we were playing for a little dance, boy, were we surprised when we walked into the Civic Center.  There was a huge crowd and everyone was dressed up and looked beautiful. Everyone danced all night long and had a wonderful time,” stated Hack Bartley of the band Hack Bartley and Shuffle.

From the moment you arrived at the Civic Center you knew this would be a night you’d remember. Over 500 people were on hand to enjoy a delicious dinner of sliced roast beef and chicken, hash brown casserole, vegetable medley and dessert, catered by Lee’s Barbecue. Capital Bank provided a beautiful ice sculpture which was resting on a wishing well. As everyone arrived they were given a gold coin to make a wish before entering the arena. Beautiful roses, peacock feathers, balloons, and twinkling lights transformed the Civic Center into a beautiful ballroom.

Local merchants, volunteers and Emerald Center staff members donated their time and services to make the ball possible. The tuxedos, dresses and photographs were provided at a much reduced rate, several cosmetologists and barbers helped with hair styles and makeup, and several businesses and individuals made contributions for decorations, flowers, food, and overall funding.

Once again students from Lander University’s Phi Mu Sorority volunteered their services to help decorate the civic center, provide door prizes, assist with makeup, serve dinner, dance and help clean up after the dance. Joining them to assist with evening were students from Piedmont Technical College’s Residential Therapy Class, Erskine College’s Service Opportunities Class, Capital Bank and Cutler Hammer associates.

“We are fortunate at Emerald Center to be surrounded by such love and support from the community.  We thank everyone who had a part in making this night possible. Special thanks to our staff that always go beyond the call of duty to make this an outstanding occasion,” stated J. Felton Burton, Executive Director of Emerald Center.

SPECIAL NEEDS AT CHRISTMAS 2003

As I write this letter, I have just looked over the “Special Needs at Christmas” list. This year the list contains 232 people or families needing help, which is 76 more people than we helped in 2002.

In 1993 the Emerald Center Foundation requested that the Emerald Center staff develop a list of people or families with special needs at Christmas. They found in many cases unless help was provided the people on the list would not receive a gift. Over the past nine years it has been heartwarming for me to see the tremendous support that has been given to making Christmas a very special time for some very special people.

Any help you can give toward meeting these needs will be greatly appreciated. There are several ways to assist with this effort – monetary donations, sponsoring a person(s), or donations of food and new or used merchandise. All contributions are tax deductible. If you would like a copy of the list, please call Ann Hembree in the Foundation Office at 942-4902 or email: ahembree@schsp.org.

We truly appreciate whatever you can give, and we know these people will too.

With warm regards,

Doris D. Burton, Chairperson
