          From the Director...

This edition of the Emerald Center Newsletter is dedicated to Representative Marion P. Carnell for his dedication and commitment to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities and special needs throughout the State of South Carolina.

Emerald Center would not be where it is today had it not been for the tireless efforts of Representative Carnell.  Today, people with disabilities and special needs are living lives with dignity and respect.  They have the opportunity to make choices and achieve their goals and dreams.  They are living meaningful and productive lives in our communities.  They work, shop, develop friendships, attend church, enjoy athletic and social events, volunteer, share their gifts and talents, eat out, go to the movies ---just like everyone else.

I remember when federal law mandated that institutions downsize and programs

be made available in the communities for people with disabilities, Representative and Mrs. Carnell were among the first to welcome them as their next door neighbors.

Representative Carnell has been one of the most respected legislators of all time and is a man of unquestionable integrity.  He has that ability to work in a non-partisan way to help his fellowman.

Emerald Center will continue to benefit from Representative Carnell’s devotion in different ways so we will not bid farewell to him as retires from the South Carolina legislature but look forward to working with him to continue providing quality services.

As a parent and on behalf of all of those who can’t speak for themselves, I would like to thank Representative Carnell for all that he has done to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and for the many contributions he has made to the State of South Carolina.

We love you, Mr. Carnell, and may God richly bless you for all the wonderful programs you helped to develop.

                                                                        J. Felton Burton

Emerald Center Saluda Open House

A large crowd of approximately 200 people attended Emerald Center’s open house on October 22 at the new location at 101 R L Sawyer MD Road.  A great deal of pride was evident as guests walked through the facility and were able to see Emerald Center clients and staff at work preparing cameras for recycling or assembling mops and brooms.  Refreshments were served in the new “state-of-the-art” cafeteria.

The new 15,000 square foot facility provides day program services for adults from Edgefield and Saluda counties.   Dr. Bill Sawyer donated the property for the construction of the center.   Service Coordination and Early Intervention offices are also located in the center.

Since 1977 Emerald Center has provided services to Saluda and Edgefield counties when the multi-county board (serving Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, McCormick and Saluda counties) was formed.  Individuals with disabilities and special needs were transported to Greenwood for day program services until the center was opened on West Highland Street in 1986.  Due to the growth and demand for services, the West Highland Street facility became inadequate.

“We are excited and pleased with the new facility.  For some time we have been overcrowded at the old facility.  We have always appreciated the acceptance and support from the communities in Edgefield and Saluda counties.  We especially want to thank Dr. Bill Sawyer for his help in making this new center become a reality,” stated J. Felton Burton, Executive Director.

The day program provides a safe, healthy work and training environment for adults over the age of 21.  These individuals are trained in vocational skills through in-house contracts and projects for local businesses, which include the Wild Turkey Federation, Fuji Photo Film, Greenwood Mop and Broom Company and the O’Dell Corporation.  The individuals are able to gain valuable work skills while earning money.  Progression to other employment opportunities is the long-term aim of this area. On an individual basis, training is also offered in socialization, self-help and independent living skills.  Through the supported employment program individuals are also employed in Edgefield at McDonalds and in Saluda at Hardee’s and Piggly Wiggly.

Emerald Center provides services for over 800 people with disabilities and special needs (autism, mental retardation, head injuries, spinal cord injuries and related lifelong disabilities) in Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, McCormick and Saluda counties with 345 staff members.  Day programs are provided at the centers in Greenwood, Saluda and Ware Shoals with residential services provided in 19 community residences, community training homes and several apartment complexes throughout the five counties.  Child Development, Early Intervention, Respite, Rehab Support, Head and Spinal Cord Injury services are also provided.

For information concerning services please contact the Service Coordination office in Saluda at 445-8178.

 Special Needs at Christmas 2002

Dear Friends,

The purpose of this letter is to let you know about some very special needs at Christmas.  The Emerald Center staff has compiled a list of 151 people with disabilities needing our help.   The gifts that have been made possible by the Foundation’s Special Needs at Christmas, in most cases, are the only gifts that these clients receive.  This is the eighth year of this campaign and I am happy to report that over 1,200 people have been helped.

If you would like to help with this effort, please send your contributions to the Emerald Center Foundation, P. O. Box 3004, Greenwood, SC.   If you would like a copy of the list of the needs, please contact Ann Hembree in the Foundation Office at 942-4902 or by writing Emerald Center Foundation, P. O. Box 3004, Greenwood, SC  29648. Your donations are tax deductible.

It is a privilege for me to help the Foundation continue the great tradition it has for making Christmas a special time for all of our clients.

We truly appreciate whatever you can give, and we know our clients will too.

                                                                        With warm regards,

                                                                         Doris D. Burton

Memories made in Charleston

While planning the trip to Charleston, the staff members worked diligently to provide a completely accessible trip for everyone.  Boles Bus Lines provided a handicapped accessible chartered bus just for this trip. “Arthur Starks and Zelma Wardlaw had the pleasure of sharing a seat on the bus together for the first time,” stated Ralph Lindsay, Greenwood Day Program Coordinator.

“This was an outstanding trip.  Many people in the Charleston area were very complimentary of our clients and staff.  A guest at our hotel came up to me on Sunday and said that he had checked in at the same time we did on Friday.  He said they had observed us all weekend and just wanted to ask about our agency.  He stated that the clients and staff were all smiling and having a wonderful time and that he had never seen an agency do this, especially of this magnitude.  He went on to say that he had a brother with disabilities and wished he could experience a trip like this,” stated Emma Gaskin, Director of Greenwood Day Programs.

The buses pulled out of Emerald Center’s parking lot at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning headed for Charleston, stopping for a picnic and then onto the hotel in North Charleston.  After a brief rest, everyone began getting ready for a very special evening at the South Carolina Aquarium.   “The aquarium was a beautiful setting for the dinner/dance.  We had everything from delicious hors d’oeuvres to dinner and dancing.  The DJ said he had never experienced such a wonderful evening or had so much fun.  He said he had never played for a group that danced from the first song till the last,” stated Gaskin.

On Saturday it was a day of searching for sea shells at Folly Beach, shopping, recreation, dinner at the Old Country Buffet and Frankie’s Fun Park.  After breakfast on Sunday, everyone loaded up the buses and headed to downtown Charleston and Mt. Pleasant for a bus tour before heading to Columbia for shopping at Columbiana Mall and then on to Greenwood.

“We would like to thank everyone who had a part in helping make this trip a reality.  The clients, staff and parents worked together during the year to raise funds with M&M and donut sales. The clients saved their money to help with expenses and the Emerald Center Foundation also provided assistance.  And last but not least thanks to this wonderful community we are so blessed to live in who support these type of outings,” stated Sonja Irvin, Coordinator of Operations Services

140 Emerald Center clients and staff recently spent the weekend in Charleston.

Visiting Emerald Center

North Side Baptist Church’s Dorcas Sunday School Class recently visited Emerald Center.

“We are grateful for the interest and support we are receiving from the community.  We invite and encourage businesses, organizations, and groups to tour Emerald Center.  Since July 1, we have visits from Greenwood School District’s Special Education Teacher, United Way volunteers and staff, Piedmont Tech Nurses, Lander Nurses, 12 groups of Fuji associates, and County Bank staff members, stated Laurie Cordell, Greenwood/McCormick/Saluda Operations Manager.  “Most always, people come away from the tours commenting that they didn’t realize how many people are being served by Emerald Center, how much work is performed each day at the center, and how much they enjoyed meeting the Emerald Center family.”

For information about Emerald Center or to schedule a tour, please contact Teresa Medlin at 942-8902 or tmedlin@schsp.org.
