From The Director…

A Night To Remember!

"Just one note, that’s all you’ll have to play and everyone will be on the dance floor for the remainder of the evening!" This was my response to a band member after he commented that the band would play a couple of numbers to get everyone on the dance floor.

I will never forget walking into the Civic Center on the night of September 4 for the Emerald Center Prom. Excitement filled the air as everyone arrived in their beautiful dresses and handsome tuxedos. Balloons, streamers, and twinkling lights had transformed the Civic Center into a beautiful ballroom.

After the pictures were taken and a delicious meal was served, I had the honor of recognizing all of the businesses in our five county area that provide work opportunities for our people.

As the music began that evening, I again realized how lucky we are at Emerald Center to be in a place of total trust, understanding, support and love everyday. I saw people who do not see others by their classification. They love you unconditionally regardless of your faults and limitations. I also saw that evening, Emerald Center staff and volunteers whose work brought them an unforgettable experience.

This night was made possible by many of you through your support of the Emerald Center Foundation and by local formal wear companies, seamstresses, cosmetologists, caterers, photographers, florists, our excellent staff and many volunteers from the community.

Thank you for all you do to provide these opportunities for people with disabilities.

Oh, what an evening it was!

I’m Thankful

by Samuel Robinson, Jr.

Samuel Robinson My name is Samuel Robinson, Jr. I am 28 years old and have Practical Muscular Dystrophy. I was born and raised in Saluda County and still live there. I remember at a much younger age I use to run and play. But at the age of 5, I had problems in walking. I did not receive treatment until I was 7. When I started treatment, I went to Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
When they could not help me, they transferred my records to a doctor in Aiken.

I used to use a walker. But now I do not use one. I remember that back then no one knew what I had. The school board took me out of school and I stayed out one year. The next year I started at another school in Aiken County where I graduated.

My hobbies are fishing; games; and repairing clocks, fans, and radios. I attend the day program at Emerald Center in Saluda. I enjoy working at the center. We make mops and stuff envelopes for the National Wild Turkey Federation. I am married and have a 16 month old daughter named Selena Marie. I enjoy being a father and I am thankful to be a father. I help care for my daughter when her mother goes to work. My hope is that I live to see my daughter become a grown woman. But if I don’t I still have the time we did share.

1997 Special Needs at Christmas Campaign

Laughter and shouts of joy filled Emerald Center facilities last year during Christmas.

Santa visited Christmas parties at the three centers on December 20 distributing gifts to over 350 individuals. Through the "Special Needs at Christmas Campaign", gifts were distributed throughout the five counties (Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, McCormick, and Saluda) to individuals with special needs.

Over the past four years, due to the tremendous support from the Emerald Center Foundation, the community, and staff, Emerald Center has provided for over 400 individuals and/or their families with special needs with items such as clothing, firewood, groceries, drinking water, diapers, toys, personal care items, shoes, coats, toiletries, kitchen utensils, Christmas cards, and visits.

"They were overjoyed with the clothing and toys. They were especially overwhelmed with the clothing — the new pajamas and coats for the winter. They couldn’t believe that people were doing this for them," said Ruth Ellerbe, Early Interventionist.

"I wish everyone could have been there when Santa called Ricky’s name, he hollered and ran to Santa to receive his gift," stated Emma Gaskins, Assistant Day Program Coordinator.

"Ophelia was overwhelmed. She thanked me over and over. She wanted to know ‘who did this for me’. Also, when Mary opened her gift, a new coat and clothing, she couldn’t believe it. These gifts were the only ones she received during Christmas," said Diana Carver, Service Coordinator.

"Reflecting back, it was a humbling experience when I asked the families what they needed and the answer I received many times was things like shampoo, deodorant, food, water, paper products, firewood — things that most of us take for granted," stated Kim Brown, Director of Service Coordination.

"Robert was so proud of his new coat. He put it on and we couldn’t get him to take it off. He wears it all the time," stated Sonja Irvin, Program Coordinator.

"When I walked into the conference room and saw all the clothing, toys, and food that had been donated, I was filled with joy," said J. Felton Burton, Executive Director. "To know that there are so many generous people out there who really care for the people we serve is wonderful. This is what Christmas is all about."

Plans are already underway for the 1997 Special Needs at Christmas Campaign. A special needs list is being compiled and will be distributed in November. If you would like to assist with this very worthy cause, please call Emerald Center at 942-8900.

Plans for Volunteer Program at Emerald Center Moving Forward

As the demand for services for people with disabilities and special needs grows, so must we be innovative and creative in ways to provide these services. Another way that we hope to assist participants at Emerald Center is to provide extra assistance through people who are willing to share some free time.

The Volunteer Program is a vital component to the success and quality of services provided at Emerald Center. Every day there is the opportunity to enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities and their families. Volunteers will be trained to assist staff members in a such a way as to help each individual reach their full potential as contributing citizens. Our goal is to improve quality of life.

The Volunteer Program will be designed to accommodate volunteers by providing schedules of duties and training suitable for each individual. Please consider contributing some time to this very worthy cause. Applications are now available for volunteer work in the Human Resources Department - Emerald Center, 929 Phoenix Street in Greenwood.
